Concerto competition winners featured in symphony concert

The UW Symphony will perform with the winners of the November concerto competition on Thursday, Jan. 28 in Meany Theater.

Every year the School of Music sponsors a concerto competition for its students and chooses three or four winners who each get to perform with the symphony in January. This year the winners are Chris Lennard, marimba; Gabriel Manalac, piano; and Jessica Polin, flute. Lennard is a student of Thomas Collier and Michael Crusoe who plans to complete his bachelor’s degree in both music education and percussion performance in spring 2010. Manalac, who is pursuing a Master in Music in piano performance, studies with Robin McCabe. Polin is a student of Donna Shin. She plans to complete the degree of Master of Music in flute performance in spring 2010.

Program selections include movements from Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra, by James Basta; Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 10, by Sergei Prokofiev; and Concerto for Flute and String Orchestra, by Andre Jolivet.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10, and are available at the Arts Ticket Office, 206-543-4880. For more information, go to www.music.washington.edu.
