Photo of Suzzallo takes prize in photo contest, one more week to go

The second week of our photo contest is over and we have another winner! Drum roll please: The prize goes to Lisa Jones, who answers phones and takes emergency calls at the University, for her photo, Suzzallo Reading Room in Reflection. Jones wins dinner and beverages for two at Saffron Grill in Northgate for her photo, which was chosen from among about 100 entries by University Photographer Kathy Sauber.

The Photographer says: I wanted to take a picture of Suzzallo but I wanted it to be a little different, so I walked into the glassed-in area of the reading room and looked out, and I thought it would be great if I could get the lights to reflect on the table. Then I added the books and got their reflection too. It took me several shots to get what I wanted, but I had a good time doing it.

I have no formal training in photography, but it’s been a serious hobby of mine for about five years, ever since I got my first SLR camera. I’ve sold a few of my photos on eBay and to people I know, and I once won a photo contest on betterphoto.com. Photography is relaxing for me. When I’m doing it, I forget everything else.

The Expert says: The photos this week are stunning and so artistic with beautiful compositions. I had to look at them many times, but this photo of the reading room kept jumping off the page every time. I love the strong diagonal lines and the reflection on the table. The lighting is beautiful and I like the simplicity of a straight photo that stands on its own without relying on Photoshop to enhance its color or composition.

Our contest continues for one more week, but entries from previous weeks will not be considered unless they are resubmitted. The remaining judging period is:

  • May 23-29 (Winner announced June 4)

The final prize generously donated by our advertiser is:

  • One night in the Japanese Hydrotherapy Tub Room at Hotel Nexus, which includes a king sized bed, a Japanese hydrotherapy soaking tub, aromatherapy diffuser, walk-in shower with rain showerhead and premium spa amenities.

As always, photos must be of one of the three UW campuses or of activities sponsored by the University. Limit of five entries per contest period. To submit yours, simply click on the Community Photos tab from our homepage, uweek.org, then click on “submit your photo.” You will be asked to register; then you can upload your photos. Winners will be featured in University Week.
