Etc: campus news & notes

SIMPLY BRILLIANT: Popular Science magazine chose Yoky Matsuoka, associate professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, for a spot on this year’s “Brilliant 10” list. The annual feature includes judges’ picks for the top 10 young researchers in the country. Matsuoka, 36, who also received a MacArthur “genius grant” recently, was honored for her quest “to build the ultimate prosthetic — a fully functional replica of the human hand, controlled directly by the brain.”

GREEN BUILDING QUEEN: Clara Simon, sustainability manager for the Capital Projects Office, is being presented with the 2007 Emerging Leader Award through BetterBricks in Puget Sound, which recognizes individuals for their support, use and design of sustainable, high performance, commercial buildings with a special emphasis on energy efficiency in the Northwest. Simon manages the green building program at the UW. She also is a guest lecturer at the UW for sustainability in the built environment and is working on the UW 2008 Focus the Nation Conference for students, professionals, businesses and community, focusing on the impacts of global climate change. The award will be presented Oct. 25 at the Bell Harbor International Convention Center.

DISTINGUISHED PSYCHOLOGISTS: Irwin and Barbara Sarason, emeritus professors of psychology, were honored by the Washington State Psychological Association with Distinguished Psychologist Awards at the group’s recent annual meeting. The award is given for lifetime achievement.

BLOGGING LIBRARIAN: Cass Hartnett, U.S. documents librarian at UW Libraries, wrote five reflective essays as the invited Blogger of the Month for the Free Government Information Web site. And what does a documents librarian write about? Well, Hartnett wrote about the grassroots effort to get air fresheners regulated, and about the response of local government to her report of a dead crow near her house, among other things.
