Diversity institute’s ‘Place Matters’ conference coming Oct. 27-28
“Place Matters: Seeking Equity in a Diverse Society” is the title of a conference slated for Oct. 27 and 28 at the Center for Urban Horticulture. Sponsored by the Diversity Research Institute, the conference begins with a walking tour of Seattle’s High Point mixed-income community revitalization project from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27.
The key note address that evening, Fountains, Candy Stores and Sand: Thoughts on Placemaking in Seattle, will be presented by Mindy Thompson Fullilove, professor of clinical psychiatry and sociomedical sciences at Columbia University. An exhibition and performance are scheduled for 6 p.m., with the lecture at 7.
On Saturday, Oct. 28, the plenary speakers are Karina Walters, associate professor of social work, and Devon Pena, professor of anthropology and American ethnic studies, both of the UW, with theme sessions on Placemaking, Place and Power, Sense of Place and Methods of Inquiry. The Saturday session will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
