Impulsive, hyperactive or fidgety youngsters sought for UW study

Four- and 5-year-old children who are extremely active, oppositional, fidgety, squirmy, temperamental or have difficulty maintaining their attention are being sought by University of Washington researchers to participate in a pilot study.

The youngsters are needed for the study that is designed to determine what children will go on to have hyperactivity or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, according to Theodore Beauchaine, assistant professor of psychology.

“The earlier we can identify children who may have problems, the earlier we can do something to help them,” said Beauchaine. “Parents tend not to notice these problems until their children are 6 or 7years old.

Participation in the study requires less than an hour. Children will have their heart rate and breathing monitored while they play a game and complete a challenging block building task with a parent. Children selected for the study can be tested at a time convenient for parents including evenings and the weekend. Parents will be paid $75 for their child’s participation and children will be able to select one toy from a group of prizes.

Parents may obtain more information or volunteer for the study by calling
