Staffer relishes CFD roles

The Combined Fund Drive runs through Nov. 21. Throughout the drive, University Week has featured faculty and staff who give back to the community by volunteering their time.

Name: Genie Jefferson

UW position: Human Resources Consultant, upper campus

Volunteer activity: Combined Fund Drive Coordinator

Time as a volunteer: I was the CFD Representative in 2000 for HR, and assumed the role of Coordinator for 2001. I have also coordinated the United Way efforts in previous positions prior to working at the University.

Why this activity? To assume this role involves many skills, such as mentoring, leading and becoming a change agent. It has given me an opportunity to share knowledge, assist in educating others and informing employees how beneficial their participation is. If I perform successfully in all my roles, then I have paved the way for my successor.

Memorable Experiences while Volunteering: At a recent staff meeting, I introduced the Charity Bingo Game (courtesy of International Service Agencies, Women’s Funding Alliance, Community Health Charities and Earth Share of Washington) in an effort to promote participation, and enhance knowledge of facts and figures relating to charitable organizations. It was a hit. Not only did my co-workers enjoy the prizes (CFD poster and mouse pad), but their awareness of disadvantaged men, women and children was heightened. I’m sure it made a difference in their outlook and contributions.

Satisfaction in volunteering: My job at the University involves interaction on a daily basis dealing with employee relations. Volunteering gives me the opportunity to collaborate with other HR divisions and allows them to see me in a different role.
