Welcome to the second E-news of the School’s 75th anniversary celebration.

In this issue, I am thrilled to invite you to the School’s Inaugural Scholarship Breakfast Fundraiser on March 9.  Supporting future social workers by providing financial assistance to SSW students has become crucial, now more than ever.  Tuition, as well as future income-to-debt ratio, continues to rise and students need our support. We hope to raise more than $50,000 for the Social Work Students First Fund, which awards scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students. The event is chaired by SSW alumnus James Kelly, MSW ’80, CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle and our special guest is William H. Gates Sr., co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Mr. Gates and I will discuss his new book, Showing Up for Life. Please join us at the Inaugural Scholarship Breakfast.

As we continue to celebrate this important anniversary, the School continues to receive alumni updates and communication. It gives me such pride to hear about the many professional accomplishments of our alumni community; it is clear that SSW alumni are committed to social change and are truly "redefining what’s possible." I encourage you to stay in touch and invite you to join us in School’s 75th anniversary activities.

The School strives to model what universities can and must do to best serve society. We bring keen analysis and evidence to bear upon complex problems. We recruit and educate the best and brightest to service and leadership. We partner strategically to create lasting social change and our alumni, faculty and students are doing just that.

Because at its heart, social work is social change.

Enjoy the issue.

Warmest regards,

Edwina Uehara
