Ashley Johnson | At-Large Trustee

Class of 1997, Bachelor of Science, Biochemistry

Ashley Johnson portraitWhy I Serve

Going off to college is kind of magical. It’s often your first taste of independence. I applied to the UW and was accepted without ever having visited. My grandparents lived in Washington and I just knew I wanted to be here. I spent my first year living in the old Lander Hall, walking across campus among the cherry blossoms and majesty of Suzzallo Library.

When I was around seven years old, I thought about being a dentist and then a pilot. I didn’t have much of an idea of becoming a doctor until I was in college. I volunteered for a while at the UW Medical Center. It was in the surgical center and I got to watch some orthopedic surgeries. I followed that by volunteering at Harborview Medical Center. After those experiences, I started thinking about pursuing medicine.

I like the idea of lifelong learning. It’s something that I still do practicing medicine. One of my main goals is to help promote the idea of keeping educational costs down for students. I want them to be able to keep an open mind during their time at UW. Whatever class you take, whatever activity, explore and keep an open mind about your opportunities.
