For 2011–2012, Level 2 of the Strategic Leadership Program (SLP) will focus on leadership agility through a series of four half-day workshops. Designed for UW managers, directors, and other executives, the Leadership Agility Series is based on the work of Bill Joiner and Stephen Josephs, authors of Leadership Agility: Five Levels of Mastery for Anticipating and Initiating Change.
The winter workshop provides a brief overview of Joiner and Josephs' Leadership Agility Compass and levels of development. The focus will then move to stakeholder agility, which is the leadership competency used to understand stakeholders’ perspectives and interests and to communicate in ways that build alignment and resolve differences.
In discussions where important outcomes are at stake, stakeholder agility is essential. Almost inevitably, people come to these kinds of conversations with differing views and priorities. Whether these discussions contribute to or detract from achieving your goals often depends on your conversational behavior in the moment. Developing your stakeholder agility allows you to both present your current point of view as clearly and persuasively as possible and to extend yourself as creatively as you can to embrace others' points of view. These skills shift conversations from unilateral intention (focusing only what is good for yourself) to collaborative intention (willingness to develop solutions that take into account the priorities of all the key stakeholders—including yourself).
Participants will assess their current level of agility in the stakeholder competency; set goals and an action path; and define resources to reach the level to which they aspire and that matches what is required in their current environment. Goals and plans will be tied to developing skills through current initiatives in participants’ day-to-day work world.
Participation in the entire Leadership Agility Series is not required to attend this workshop. Learn more about SLP Level 2: Leadership Agility Series.
