The Director of Web Strategy

The Director’s role plays a pivotal part in advancing the University’s digital presence through strategic leadership, cross-campus collaboration, and operational excellence. The role defines and evolves the strategic direction of the Web Strategy Team in alignment with UMAC’s goals and the University’s brand promise, while managing project intake and fostering partnerships with key stakeholders. Through expert consultation on web design, development, content strategy, and digital marketing, the role ensures high-impact outcomes across all campuses. Operationally, they oversee personnel management, resource planning, and team performance, while also stewarding the University’s digital brand through governance of top-level websites, accessibility compliance, and crisis communications. This comprehensive approach ensures a cohesive, accessible, and forward-thinking digital experience across the institution.

Position responsibilities

Strategic leadership and vision

  • Defines and evolves the strategic direction of the Web Strategy Team in alignment with UMAC’s broader goals and the University’s brand promise.
  • Provides overarching leadership and coordination across the Web Strategy team, including Web and Mobile Operations, Web Engagement, and Content Strategy and User Experience.
  • Maintains direct relationships with the Associate Director of Web and Mobile Operations, Assistant Director of Web Engagement, and Assistant Director of Content Strategy and User Experience.
  • Focuses operational oversight more heavily on the Web Engagement team while supporting strategic alignment across all sub-teams.
  • Directs and champions cross-functional initiatives including accessibility, crisis communications, and the “Profound Engagement at Scale” program.
  • Coordinates efforts across sub-teams to ensure cohesive execution and impact.
  • Set priorities and manage project intake and general project traffic, ensuring balanced workload across sub-teams.
  • Leads cross-functional collaboration with UMAC, UW-IT, and external vendors to support high-impact digital initiatives.
  • Supports the evolution of the team’s role in digital transformation and engagement at scale.

Campus partnerships stakeholder engagement

  • Provides consulting and strategic guidance to units across campus with a focus on infrastructure, web development, content strategy, user experience, and digital marketing.
  • Maintains strong partnerships with university stakeholders to support digital initiatives and ensure alignment with institutional goals.
  • Serves as a strategic advisor for internal projects with a web component, including resourcing, kickoff consultations, and vendor coordination.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with vendors; manages contracts and engagements.

Operational and personnel management

  • Supervises direct reports, ensuring team cohesion and professional development.
  • Supports hiring and onboarding in all team roles.
  • Coordinates with internal teams and Advancement teams for budget and resource planning, facilities, and process optimization.
  • Collaborates with project managers on traffic and project management for the team and triages work to individual contributors.
  • Supports the team’s overall needs and performance.
  • Oversees team meetings and weekly and daily check-ins.
  • Acts as team spokesperson.

Policy, compliance, and governance

  • Oversees digital governance, training programs, and web communications strategies.
  • Leads efforts in policy development, enforcement, and compliance across digital properties.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to shape and implement policies related to Title II accessibility, security, and privacy.
  • Serves on governance and advisory boards and consults on compliance matters to ensure institutional standards are met.
  • Oversee the management top-level UW websites, including the homepage, “Boundless,” and branded microsites.
  • Creates and enforces guidelines, best practices, training resources, and more.
  • Enforces brand standards for digital experiences.
  • Partners with units and central administration on matters of governance and compliance.
  • Works with campus partners to ensure Title II / accessibility compliance.
  • Ensures alignment with UW’s decentralized communications model, empowering units while maintaining central standards.
  • Participates in crisis communications.
