DESCRIPTION: THIS IS A HANDS ON
COURSE IN WHICH WE WILL PARTNER WIT
THE NATURE CONSERVANCY (TNC) IN
WASHINGTON TO EXPLORE THE LANDSCAPE
LEVEL EFFECTS OF HOUSING DEVELOPMEN
ACROSS THE STATE. WE WILL USE A
COMBINATION OF HIGH RESOLUTION
REMOTELY SENSED DATA SETS,
DEMOGRAPHIC DATA, AND SPATIAL
ANALYSES TO EXPLORE WHERE LAND
CONVERSION IS OCCURRING, AND WHICH
NATURAL SYSTEMS AND HUMAN
POPULATIONS ARE BEING IMPACTED. FOR
EXAMPLE, WE MAY EXPLORE TO WHAT
DEGREE DEVELOPMENT IS HAPPENING AT
THE URBAN WILDLAND INTERFACE, WHAT
PORTION OF DEVELOPMENT IS HAPPENING
IN FIRE-PRONE AREAS AND WHICH
POPULATIONS ARE MOST EXPOSED TO FIR
RISK, AND WHETHER URBAN AND SUBURBA
DEVELOPMENT IS CHANGING ACCESS TO
NATURE, HEAT ISLAND EFFECTS, AND
