Perspectives in Public Health April 26
The UW School of Public Health and Community Medicine will present Perspectives in Public Health — A Matter of Health and Safety: Public Health Looking Back, Leading Forward Thursday, April 26, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., in 110 Kane.
UW faculty members will discuss successful public health initiatives, remaining challenges, as well as public health education, research, and practice. The event is free, and a reception follows in the Walker-Ames room in Kane Hall.
Speakers are:
Mary Selecky, secretary of health, Washington State Department of Health: Partnerships: The Key to Public Health.
Ward Hinds (MD, MPH), retiring head of the Snohomish Health District: History of Public Health and its role in making Washington a healthier and safer place to live.
Colleen Huebner (PhD, MPH), associate professor, Department of Health Services: Importance of Infant Dental Health – Baby Teeth Are No Small Matter.
Ann Vander Stoep (PhD), associate professor, Department of Epidemiology: Adolescent Depression and Preventive Screening.
Joel Kaufman (MD,MPH), professor, Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences and Epidemiology: Ground-breaking research on the effects of pollution on cardiovascular and respiratory disease.
Paula Diehr (PhD), professor, Department of Biostatistics: Which Older Adults are the Healthiest?
Gary M. Goldbaum (MD, MPH), ’89, in-coming head of Snohomish Health District: Importance of a strong public health profession.
The 2007 Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented to Natalia Kanem, (MD, MPH), ’90, on behalf of the SPHCM Alumni Advisory Board. (Please see related article — Dr. Natalia Kanem to receive Public Health’s Distinguished Alumni Award.).
