In 2006, UW launched the Business, Academic and Research Continuity (BARC) program to meet the responsibilities outlined in Administrative Policy Statement 13.2 to support every department/unit at the University of Washington in the continuity planning process.
The BARC program is part of the Division of Campus Community Safety, where the program collaborates with UW Emergency Management, the Crisis Communications team and the UW IT Disaster Recovery team.
What is BARC?
The BARC program works directly with departments across the University (an entire school, college or division or a smaller specialized unit) in Seattle, Bothell and Tacoma to create continuity plans.
Continuity planning involves identifying your department’s critical functions and the resources needed to support them, then developing action plans for continued operations using workarounds or alternatives. BARC will show you how to make that plan.

Ensure seamless and sustained operations during disruptive events by promoting a culture of resilience, mitigating risks and minimizing the impact of incidents at the University of Washington.
Oversight and governance
The University’s approach to continuity and resiliency is grounded in Administrative Policy Statement 13.2, which details the UW’s commitment to building and supporting a culture of resilience and the requirement that units plan for disruptions.
The UW Preparedness Oversight Committee guides continuity and resiliency work. Committee members come from across UW’s three campuses.
