Founded in 1889 as an independent non-profit organization, the University of Washington Alumni Association has been the foundation for graduates and friends for more than 130 years. The UWAA is governed by a 25-member Board of Trustees, composed of alumni and community leaders responsible for providing strategic policy and fiscal leadership to the organization in support of its mission.

UWAA’s mission is to support higher education in the state of Washington and the University of Washington.

In pursuit of this mission, UWAA programs and services are sustained through affinity and sponsorship initiatives and the UWAA membership program, which operates one of the largest dues-paying alumni membership programs in the country. More than 60,000 members join together to support UWAA programs and services that benefit students, alumni, and the community through scholarships, lifelong learning, and advocacy.

Through a formal Operating Agreement, the UWAA partners with the UW and University Advancement’s Alumni & Stakeholder Engagement unit to provide engagement opportunities for alumni and friends around the world.

In 2021, the UW and UWAA formed a strategic alliance with the independent University Book Store to strengthen and expand collaborative efforts to engage students, staff, faculty, alumni, and the public. The AVP, in partnership with the VP ASE and Book Store CEO, will provide strategic leadership for the development and implementation of shared programs and services between the UW, UWAA, and the Book Store.
