WFSE-UW Early Money Back Pay Information: February 1, 2009, through June 30, 2009
This page explains how back pay adjustments were made for WFSE-represented employees covered by the "early money" back pay payment.
In accordance with a determination made by the Public Employment Relations Commission (“PERC”), the University made payments to some current and former UW employees represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE), Local 1488, for a period from February 1 through June 30 of 2009. The back pay applied to:
- Shift differential adjustments for custodians and cleaning personnel
- Skilled trades adjustments
- Shift differential adjustments for other WFSE-represented staff
Back Pay for Custodians and Cleaning Personnel
The back pay amount for custodians and cleaning personnel included the following:
- Back pay due for all hours paid at evening ($1.00/hour) or night shift ($1.25/hour) differential rates from February 1, 2009 to June 30, 2009, including any overtime worked. Payment was made through the regular payroll system and was subject to normal deductions for taxes and union dues.
- 12% interest on the amount paid, compounded daily, paid by separate check, and not subject to deductions for taxes or union dues.

- 8533 Custodian Lead
- 8536 Carpet Cleaner
- 8543 Maintenance Custodian 1

- 8777 Custodian Supervisor 2
- 8601 FDA WFSE - Leave of Absence (if doing work paid at evening or night shift differential rate and substituting for any of the other jobs on this list)
Back Pay for Skilled Trades Personnel
The back pay for skilled trades personnel in the six affected job classifications included the following:
- Back pay due as a result of the higher base pay rate that should have been paid for the period of
February 1, 2009 through June 30, 2009, including any overtime worked. Payment was made through the regular payroll system and was subject to normal deductions for taxes and union dues.
- 12% interest on the amount paid, compounded daily, paid by separate check, and not subject to deductions for taxes or union dues.
Affected WFSE-UW Skilled Trades Classifications
Job classes eligible for two pay ranges of back pay:
- 8825 Carpenter
- 8826 Carpenter Lead
Job classes eligible for four pay ranges of back pay:
- 8858 Plumber/Pipefitter/Steamfitter
- 8859 Plumber/Pipefitter/Steamfitter Lead
- 8836 Elevator Mechanic
- 8837 Elevator Mechanic Lead
Other Affected WFSE-UW Classifications
Other WFSE-UW classifications not already eligible for a higher shift differential rate were eligible for the higher back pay shift differential rate of $1.00 per hour.
For employees in any of these classifications, all hours paid at evening or night shift differential rates from February to June 2009 were used in the back pay calculation, including overtime.
