At the University of Washington, we recognize the importance of responsible and ethical conduct in the pursuit of scientific knowledge, including our commitment to the ethical treatment of animals involved in research. Our animal research program operates with the utmost dedication to transparency, accountability, and the highest standards of animal welfare.

The following principles guide our research endeavors:

  1. Ethical Framework: We adhere to a strong ethical framework that prioritizes the well-being of the animals involved in our research. Our principles are guided by the “Three Rs” – Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement – as we continuously strive to find alternatives to animal use, minimize the number of animals used, and refine our methods to enhance their welfare.
  2. Regulatory Compliance: Our animal research program operates in full compliance with all relevant local, national, and international regulations governing the use of animals in research. We work closely with our institutional animal care and use committees (IACUCs) to ensure rigorous oversight and adherence to guidelines.
  3. Animal Welfare Protocols: We are dedicated to providing the best possible care for the animals in our research program. Our comprehensive protocols encompass proper housing, enrichment, veterinary care, and humane endpoints to guarantee the well-being of every individual involved.
  4. Scientific Integrity: We conduct research that aligns with the principles of scientific integrity and contributes meaningfully to the advancement of knowledge. We commit to transparently reporting both positive and negative outcomes to contribute to the broader scientific community.
  5. Training and Education: Our researchers and animal care staff undergo thorough training to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for responsible animal research. We prioritize ongoing education to stay abreast of the latest advancements in animal welfare and research methodologies.
  6. Outreach: We are committed to engaging with both the UW community and the public, sharing information about the importance of our research, and addressing concerns related to animal use in scientific endeavors. Through outreach efforts, we aim to foster understanding and trust within our community.
  7. Continuous Improvement: We recognize the importance of continuous improvement in our practices. We regularly assess and update our policies and procedures to reflect advancements in ethical standards, scientific knowledge, and regulatory requirements.

By upholding these principles, we affirm our dedication to conducting research that is not only scientifically rigorous but also ethically responsible. We invite you to explore our website for more detailed information about our animal research program and welcome any inquiries or feedback.
