Submitted by the University of Washington Animal Care, Outreach, and 3Rs (ACO3Rs) Program
Submitted: July 14,2025
At the University of Washington, we are committed to advancing both scientific discovery and ethical responsibility through our support of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), including Non-Animal Models. These innovative approaches are essential tools for modern biomedical research, and we support their thoughtful development, validation, and integration when scientifically appropriate.
Through our Animal Care, Outreach, and 3Rs (ACO3Rs) program, we have cultivated a strong foundation for promoting the 3Rs principles—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—across our research enterprise. Our program is dedicated to advancing ethical, high-quality research through a culture of care. We support scientific rigor and animal welfare at every stage of the research lifecycle by fostering collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement. Over the past three years, the ACO3Rs initiative has supported a diverse range of pilot projects and collaborative efforts, including digital biomarkers, in vitro models, and refinement strategies that enhance both scientific and animal care outcomes.
We appreciated the focus of the recent NIH/FDA workshop on the future of biomedical research and the evolving role of NAMs. As part of a research-intensive institution, we recognize the importance of scientific rigor, ethical responsibility, and the continued evolution of research practices in response to emerging technologies and public expectations. We also believe it is important to acknowledge the foundational role that animal-based research continues to play, and the high standards of care upheld by those involved in this work.
Our experience has shown that integrating innovative methods into a complex research ecosystem requires thoughtful planning, inclusive dialogue, and a commitment to continuous improvement. We are available to support these efforts through consultation, shared learning, and open communication with stakeholders across the research community.
We welcome ongoing opportunities to connect with others who are working to advance responsible, science-driven innovation. To learn more about our program or to reach out, please see the resources below.
