                        19TH CENTURY.  THE COURSE                                                                                                                           
                        FOLLOWS A HISTORICAL SEQUENCE                                                                                                                       
                        WITH SELECTIONS FROM AS EARLY AS                                                                                                                    
                        THE LATE 12TH CENTURY TO THE                                                                                                                        
                        PRESENT.  STUDENTS WILL                                                                                                                             
                        INVESTIGATE THE ROLES IN WHICH                                                                                                                      
                        WOMEN HAVE BEEN TYPICALLY                                                                                                                           
                        CAST AND STUDY HOW FEMALE                                                                                                                           
                        AUTHORS HAVE REJECTED MALE-                                                                                                                         
                        IMPOSED DEFINITIONS BY OPENING                                                                                                                      
                        THE DOORS FOR SELF-                                                                                                                                 
                        EXPLORATION OF FEMALE IDENTITY.                                                                                                                     
                        SOME PREMISES OF FEMINIST                                                                                                                           
                        CRITICAL THEORY WILL BE
