MFA candidates in dance present new work May 10-13

The UW Dance Program presents an evening of new work choreographed by current MFA candidates, Snapshots from History. Using moments in time as the impetus for movement, the concert ranges from the distinct to the universal and from individual to mythological archetypes. Concert dates are May 10-13 at the Meany Hall Studio Theater.

A central question for the evening is how each person’s distinct point of view affects his/her perception of the world. Maria-Cynthia Anderson’s piece contrasts the role that warrior initiation played in ancient Greek culture to the modern rites of urban dance. In Matter Rhonda Cinotto explores the connection between internal and external life, while Diana Garcia-Snyder presents a short dance film that was inspired by the story of the lost continent of “Mu,”(or Lemuria), which means the Mother of civilization.

Kent Lindemer’s The Fountain, is a study on the movement, conductivity and reflective qualities of water while Pamela Pietro’s B.O.B.B.Y (Working Title), asks the question, what are the miracles that lie underneath the layers of our DNA? Rounding out the evening is Erricka Turner’s L’Histoires Voisees (Voiced Histories), a journey of each dancer’s personal history in a moving narrative of ritual, joy, sorrow, anger, and kinship.

The UW MFA Program in Dance is unique in the country as it is one of the few designed for professional dancers as they transition from performing to teaching in a higher academic setting. All candidates bring a minimum of eight years professional performing experience to their UW studies and add a delightful spark to the program. This year’s annual concert highlights their own work and creativity and next year’s event will feature collaborative efforts with doctoral students from DXARTS.

Performances run Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. May 10-13. General admission tickets are $14, $12 UW Faculty/staff, UWAA members and $10 students/seniors. Tickets are available at the UW Arts Ticket office at 4001 University Way NE, by calling 206-543-4880 or online at www.meany.org
