RESIDENCE HALLS RATE: The UW’s Residence Hall Student Association (RHSA) has been selected as the winner of the national Student Award for Leadership Training, which is given to schools affiliated with the National Association of College and University Residence Halls. The winning entry, titled “Proceed with Caution: Leaders in the Making,” was selected from among eight finalists at the association’s semiannual business meeting held last month in Oshkosh, WI. To reach the national level, the entry was first selected as a Pacific Region winner at the 2006 regional conference at Central Washington University. The bid was then revised and submitted nationally in competition against the other regional bid winners.
“This is a huge honor for the students, who worked hard to create and foster the program and then enter it in the competition,” said Paul Brown, Director of Housing and Food Services.
“I am very proud of the bid that we submitted and the recognition that we have received,” said Jada Isherwood, RHSA president, “but I am even more proud of the impact that we’ve made on our student leaders through this program. We aren’t done yet; we are still helping develop our Residence Hall leaders. This year’s leadership has been one of the best I’ve seen and I’m proud to be their president.”
PSYCHED UP: Tom Lee, professor of management and associate dean for academic and faculty affairs in the Business School, has been elected a Fellow in the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. The society’s mission is to enhance human well-being and performance in organizational and work settings by promoting the science, practice and teaching of industrial-organizational psychology. Lee’s master’s thesis in psychology was on job boredom; his doctorate in business administration focused on employee turnover.
FISCAL FAME: The UW’s Student Fiscal Services has won a Best Practice Award from the Florida Association of Bursars and Student Accounting Administrators, a national organization that meets in Florida annually. It is for “Financial Literacy at the UW” — the department’s outreach program — and is one of three awards the association has made this year. Diane Cooley, assistant director of Student Fiscal Services; and Kyra Worrell, student outreach adviser, coordinate the program. The award will result in a $1,000 contribution for UW scholarships.
STATEWIDE STAR: UW Bothell staff member Rosa Lundborg will assume the role of president of the Washington Association on Postsecondary Education and Disability this spring. Lundborg, UWB’s Disability Support and Veterans Services Coordinator since 1998, will lead the association in its efforts to provide support and training for disability service professionals at postsecondary institutions throughout the state.
