Free student speaker series topics relate to common book

UW Libraries and the Friends of the Libraries are teaming up to sponsor a student speaker series relating to this year’s common book, Mountains Beyond Mountains, by Tracy Kidder. All three presentations are free and will be in Room 220 of the Odegaard Undergraduate Library.


Loyce Mbewa, a UW undergraduate majoring in public health and medical geography, is a founder of a nonprofit group seeking to help the people of her home in Rabour, a village in Kenya, fight poverty and AIDS. Mbewa will speak from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24.


Sunil Aggarwal, a UW graduate student in medicine and geography, will speak about health disparities, human rights and his work as the first elected student president of Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility. Aggarwal will speak from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2.


Paul Drain is a fourth-year medical student and former Peace Corps volunteer who used a National Institutes of Health fellowship to treat patients in a national public hospital in Tanzania. An editorial he wrote for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer appears at http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/280140_focus06.html.  Drain will speak from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8.
