Family Medicine launches Underserved Pathway

This fall, the Department of Family Medicine will launch a new program for WWAMI medical students interested in caring for underserved populations: the Underserved Pathway.

The Pathway has been formally approved by the School of Medicine and has three major components: mentorship, Web-based core curriculum and experiential learning and service.

Assistant professors Amanda Keerbs, Freddy Chen and Freya Spilberg recently traveled to WWAMI (Wyoming, Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho) state medical society and family physician meetings to recruit mentors for Underserved Pathway students.

Mentors are physicians who are currently working with underserved patients or settings and are interested in mentoring a student with similar interests.

The Underserved Pathway works closely with other School of Medicine pathways: Indian Health, Global Health, and Hispanic Health. The Underserved Pathway is partially supported by a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services Administration, Title VII, Academic Administrative Units in Primary Care program.
