UW Police earn national accreditation

News and Information

The UW Police Department has received national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). UW Police Chief Vicky M. Stormo received the certificate of accreditation at the commission’s national conference, held recently in Boston.

The UW Police Department is one of only 11 police agencies in Washington that has achieved national accreditation; only 32 college and university police departments have achieved national accreditation. The accreditation process included an on-site assessment by the commission, which reviewed departmental policies along with documents demonstrating compliance with the 446 national standards.

CALEA is an organization formed in 1979 by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Sheriff’s Association, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives and the Police Executive Research Forum to create a body of standards that further the professional level of service provided by law enforcement agencies.

Stormo said, “The accreditation process has demonstrated the quality of our organization, and has proven that the University of Washington Police Department is in line with national law enforcement practices. National accreditation through CALEA was the culmination of a lot of hard work by everyone in our department. This process has also shown the quality and professionalism of our officers and civilian staff.”
