Curator to lecture on fakes and flops

Fakes and Flops in Sculpture of the Pyramid Age is the title of a lecture by Rita Freed, curator of ancient Egyptian, Nubian and near eastern art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The talk is set for 6:30 tonight in 134 Sieg.

Freed said that because frequent museum visitors are exposed to the best of the best, they have a tendency to think, especially with regard to ancient art, that every sculptor was a master. However at her institution, the collection includes both masterpieces and the also-rans. Not only that, but the museum also owns some ancient forgeries. During her talk, Freed will show slides of the good, the bad and the forgeries — both ancient and modern.

The lecture is sponsored by the American Research Center in Egypt’s Northwest Chapter. It is free and open to the public.
