James Jiambalvo named dean of UW Business School

James Jiambalvo, a UW professor of accounting whose research includes audit decision-making, the relationships between stock prices and information, and earnings management, has been selected by UW President Mark Emmert as the new dean of the University of Washington Business School, subject to approval by the Board of Regents.

“Jim Jiambalvo is in many respects a home-grown talent and was right there under our noses,” said Emmert. “He is well-known to many in the business community, very well respected by his colleagues both here and around the country, clearly admired by his students, and most of all, has all the requisite attributes to be an exceptional and dynamic leader of our wonderful business school, which, according to the latest national rankings is a school demonstrably on the move. I’m very enthusiastic about his appointment.”

Jiambalvo, a certified public accountant, is the Pricewaterhouse Coopers and Alumni Professor in Accounting. Since joining the UW Business School in 1977, he has served as the school’s department of accounting chairman (1992-1996) and was faculty director of E-Business (2000-2003).

“I’m honored to have been named dean of such a successful program, and I’m looking forward to working with the school’s stakeholders to continue improving the offerings to undergraduates and graduate students in our degree programs and to business professionals in our executive education courses,” said Jiambalvo.

A primary goal, he said, will be to raise funds for a new business school complex that will improve the quality of the education offered and foster the interactions that create a sense of community among students, faculty and the business community.

Holder of a doctorate from Ohio State University and bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois, his most recent research focuses on the relationship between dispersion in analysts’ forecasts and stock returns.

Jiambalvo is also founding editor of the journal E-Business Review and serves on editorial boards of numerous accounting periodicals. He is the author of the textbook “Managerial Accounting.”

He has been recognized for his teaching of managerial accounting by receiving the School’s MBA Professor of the Year award. He has taught numerous executive education courses including courses for Alcoa, Boeing Co, Microsoft, Tyson, and other major firms.

Jiambalvo’s appointment is effective May 1, 2005. His annual salary will be $350,000.

The UW’s master’s in business administration program was recently ranked 18th among the nation’s best business schools by U.S.News & World Report, advancing nine spots from last year’s ranking by the weekly news magazine.

Jiambalvo replaces Professor David Burgstahler, who has served as acting dean since the beginning of this year.
