MLK tributes planned at Harborview, Health Sciences Building

Two programs honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. are planned next week, with members of the UW community and the public invited to both.

At Harborview Medical Center, the program will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11, in the medical center’s cafeteria. Speeches, songs and celebration will be included, with Sgt. Monica Hunter of the Washington State Patrol as mistress of ceremonies. The featured speaker is the Rev. Flora Wilson Bridges of Madrona Presbyterian Church and Seattle University. HMC’s Cultural Diversity Advisory Council and HMC Administration sponsor the annual event.

At the Health Sciences Building, the annual tribute will begin at noon on Thursday, Jan. 13, in the Health Sciences Lobby. The theme this year is “Live the Dream! Freedom and Respect for All.” Participants include the Eckstein Middle School Senior Jazz Band, Julian Argel, Kevin Warren from the Living Voices group, Ewajo singers and dancers, and Joe Ann Moore, song leader.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Stephen Bezruchka, a senior lecturer in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine. He works with international health students in the master’s degree program and with the Community-Oriented Public Health Practice Program. He has worked in Nepal for many years and is also an emergency physician.

The student speaker is Loyce Mbewa, a UW student working on a project to control HIV/AIDS in a village in Kenya.

A Distinguished Service Award and Community Service Awards will be presented during the program and artwork from several schools will be displayed. This event is sponsored by UW Medical Center and Health Sciences Administration.
