Seventh Annual University of Washington Faculty Field Tour: Five-day journey connects new faculty to Washington’s communities

News and Information

Thirty new UW professors and librarians will venture on a five-day tour of Washington in order to discover the culture, geography and economics of the state as part of the seventh annual Faculty Field Tour. The tour begins June 14 and concludes June 18.

As part of this 1,100-mile journey, the group will explore many different areas of the state ranging from agriculture to the core industries that make Washington thrive. The group will also have the opportunity to confer with faculty members from Washington State University.

The Faculty Field Tour is a way for the faculty of the University of Washington to make contact with different communities around the state and to learn about the diverse areas where students are coming from.

Acting UW Provost David Thorud, one of the members of the 2004 tour, underscores the educational mission of the tour.

“The UW draws students from all parts of Washington State. The Faculty Field Tour is a way for UW faculty members to understand how to be accessible to students who have grown up in different areas around Washington,” said Thorud

The university pays for meals, lodging and transportation for the tour using non-state-appropriated funds. The total cost for the week’s activities is estimated to be $40,000.
