Massachusetts General thoracic surgery chief to be visiting scholar for Cardiothoracic Surgery Division

Dr. Douglas Mathisen, chief of thoracic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and Hermes C. Grillo professor of thoracic surgery at Harvard Medical School, will be at the UW Friday as the 13th annual visiting scholar in cardiothoracic surgery.

He will present an afternoon lecture, open to everyone, on Friday, May 7, at 3:30 p.m. in room K-069 of the Health Sciences Center. His topic is “Evolution of Cardiothoracic Training.” A reception will follow.

Mathisen will also conduct teaching rounds with residents and participate in research presentations on Friday morning.

Mathisen earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1974 and was a general surgery resident and cardiothoracic resident at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1974 to 1982. He then spent two years in the Surgery Branch of the National Cancer Institute. In 1984, he returned to Boston to join the Massachusetts General cardiothoracic surgery unit and the Harvard faculty.

His research interests include management of airway disease, esophageal cancer and advanced lung cancer.
