Preparations in full swing for Health Sciences Open House

Throughout the Health Sciences Center, faculty, staff and students are making preparations for the Health Sciences Open House, set for Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Open House is free.

On both Friday and Saturday, visitors will be able to see more than 75 exhibits, many of them hands-on and interactive. Others will feature virtual reality medical presentations, high-tech patient simulators and computer models of research. Information on careers in health sciences will be available.

More than 1, 200 high school and college students are expected on Friday as part of registered groups. A scavenger hunt activity is planned to move students through the many exhibit areas.

There will be exhibits in UW Medical Center’s Surgery Pavilion this year, as well as the traditional locations in the UWMC lobby, Health Sciences Lobby, T-wing classrooms and the I Court.

On Saturday, there will be a special lecture at 11 a.m. with Kayla Burt, former Husky women’s basketball player, and Dr. Peter Kudenchuk, professor of medicine. Burt will be talking about her sudden cardiac arrest on New Year’s Eve 2002, when her fellow players and Medic One saved her life. Kudenchuk will talk about her diagnosis and the defibrillator he implanted to prevent another arrest. The lecture, free and open to everyone, will be in Hogness Auditorium, with access from the Health Sciences Lobby. Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the Open House on Saturday.
