Leader of new Emergency Management Office named

Steven Charvat has been selected as the first director of the newly created Emergency Management Office.

Charvat has 21 years of experience working in the emergency management field in both private and public organizations across the nation. Most recently, he worked in the District of Columbia, where he managed the district’s Emergency Operations Center. He was a founding member of the city’s Disaster Insurance Recovery Committee and served as the designated City Public Assistance Officer for all declared disasters.

He is past President of the International Association of Emergency Managers and a member of the National Fire Protection Association.

“We are very pleased to bring Steve Charvat to the UW,” says Sandra Lier, associate vice president for business services. “He brings a wealth of experience to this position and will help us create an office that allows the University to have a more systematic approach to emergency preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery.”

The newly created Emergency Management Office is charged with coordinating a University-wide disaster preparedness, response and recovery program. This will include planning, training and simulated disaster exercises involving staff, faculty and students as well as other supporting government units and private businesses. The purpose of the program is to create a model disaster resistant university and to save lives, protect property and safeguard the environment of the institution.
