1998 Autumn Quarter Enrollments at University of Washington

Main Campus Information

The University of Washington’s main campus 1998 Autumn Quarter enrollment is 35,108, including 1,013 students in the Evening Degree Program instituted in autumn 1990.

Undergraduate enrollment is 25,273 and graduate professional is 9,835.

Last year’s headcount was 35,367.

New freshmen, those entering the UW directly from high school, total 4,219, down as planned from 4,505 a year ago. The average grade point for the new class is 3.65, which compares to 3.60 in 1997, and the average Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) score is 1155, an increase from 1148. The average Admission Index for the class, which is derived from a formula that combines grade-point averages and SAT scores, weighting them at 75 percent and 25 percent, respectively, rose from 72 last year to 74.

New transfer students from community and baccalaureate colleges number 1,997.

State residents make up 82.4 percent of the 1998 student body, with 28,933 Washingtonians. There are 1,931 international students enrolled, constituting 5.5 percent of the total student population. Of the 25,273 undergraduates, 22,608, or 89.5 percent, are Washington residents.

Over half of the students are women, numbering 17,986 or 51.2 percent.

Minority students total 9,451 or 26.9 percent of the enrollment.

The University’s main campus record enrollment figure is 37,547, set in 1979.

Bothell and Tacoma Information

Enrollments at the Bothell and Tacoma campuses total 2,548, with 1,335 students enrolled at Tacoma and 1,213 enrolled at Bothell. The campuses enroll upper division undergraduate and graduate students.

Women account for more than half of the students at both campuses, with 71.2 percent, or 951 students, at Tacoma and 57.5 percent, or 697 students, at Bothell.

Most of the students enrolled at the Bothell campus (63.4 percent) are from King County, and 27.7 percent are from Snohomish County. The remaining students are from other areas.

Over 60 percent of the Tacoma campus students (60.1 percent) are from Pierce County, 17.8 percent from King County, 8.1 percent from Kitsap County and 6.7 percent from Thurston County. The remaining students are from other areas.
