Graduate Student Fellowship and Traineeship Awards

The titles Stipend Grad Fellow and Stipend Grad Trainee are used for students receiving fellowships and traineeships supported by funds provided by federal or private sources. While funding source guidelines must be followed in making these appointments, two University policies also apply:

1. The general requirement that graduate students with appointments make satisfactory progress in graduate programs and satisfy the enrollment requirements calls for registration of ten credit hours or more during Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters. (Separate requirements for registration apply for Summer Quarter—see Executive Order No. 28, Section 6.)

2. Fellows and trainees may provide service to the University if such service is not prohibited by the terms of the award. Non-resident students who hold appointments equivalent to Graduate Student Service Appointments eligible for the operating fee waiver are also treated as state residents for tuition purposes. Departments use the Request for Exemption from the Non-resident Portion of Tuition (NRD) form (available from the Graduate School) to identify the fellows/trainees for whom this policy should apply.
