Fourth of July Creek, Alaska
December 10, 1898

....Boyd and I each have a hole to bed rock, but we found no pay dirt. Had to sink from twelve to thirteen feet. Knapp had a hole down twelve feet and it filled with water. I have two more started. One of them will probably reach bedrock this week. Possibly each of us will get there this week. Digging gold may be exciting, and exceedingly romantic, but digging for gold is downright hard labor.
