September 11, 1898

....One poor fellow will be troubled no more with gold hunting. He was out at the mines and was visiting the tent of another party. He saw a rifle in front of him and said to one of the men, "Is this your rifle?" At the same time he caught it by the muzzle and pulled it toward him. In doing so, the hammer caught in the blankets and the gun was discharged, the bullet entering his breast. He only lived a few minutes. He had a wife and a child back east.
