Complete the required Understanding Civil Rights course for students

This message was sent on March 30, 2026 to University of Washington undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who are required to complete the Understanding Civil Rights course for students. 

Dear Student:

Understanding Civil Rights is a required online course designed for UW students. This new course introduces the University’s civil rights policies and practices, with a focus on protections related to race, color, and national origin. This course provides important information to help every student build a culture of respect and belonging for all.

You must complete the Understanding Civil Rights course by Sunday, May 31, 2026. It is available in Canvas, takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, and is best completed on a desktop or laptop rather than a mobile device.

How to access the course in Canvas

To find and complete the course:

  • Log in to Canvas.
  • Select the Understanding Civil Rights 2025-2026 course on your Canvas Dashboard or in Courses in the Global Navigation.

To have your completion recorded in Canvas, you must complete both components of the course:

  • Understanding Civil Rights interactive media lesson
  • Verification quiz (3 questions)
