Evidence-based Teaching Pilot

Background

As part of the Teaching & Learning Initiative on campus, the Office of the Provost, Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and UW-IT are leading an evidence-based teaching pilot at the University of Washington. The UW brings our strength as a research university into the classroom, using evidence-based research to improve student outcomes, demonstrating our commitment to being an R1 and a T1 institution.

The UW has a long track record of evidence-based teaching and research on progressive pedagogical techniques, including the incorporation of new technologies. Mary Pat Wenderoth, principal lecturer in biology and recipient of a campus-wide Distinguished Teaching Award is a leader is this field. Mary Pat was charged by the Teaching & Learning Initiative committee in spring 2015 to serve as the faculty mentor on the pilot to broaden evidence-based teaching efforts across campus.

Pilot description

Mary Pat Wenderoth is working alongside pilot participants by providing resources and support during the pilot design process, the course and its assessment. Instructional consultants from CTL and learning technologists from UW-IT collaborate with pilot participants as they design, enact, and assess innovations in evidence-based teaching practices. Participants also serve as resources for each other, discussing their pilots regularly in a faculty learning community. The wide array of resources and support are designed to meet the unique needs of each pilot participant and their students.  Finally, CTL and UW-IT collaborate with pilot participants throughout the academic year to meet the unique needs of each instructor and her students.
