Mission Statement
The staff, faculty and administration who comprise UWT are committed to
the success of students and to the growing vitality of the South Puget
Sound Region, through innovative teaching and vigorous inquiry,
examination, and discovery to advance knowledge.
UWT finds itself in the enviable position of creating and nurturing an
institution that is at the very intersection of student' personal goals
and the South Puget Sound Region's ambitions for itself.
The mission of the University of Washington, Tacoma is to educate the
citizens of and to meet the needs of the South Puget Sound Region, through
developing the potential of interdisciplinary teaching and scholarly
inquiry.
In existence since 1990, UWT's evolving identity is distinctive because of
its:

Commitment to innovative approaches to teaching and learning with a focus
on student competencies in critical thinking, effective oral and written
communication, and ability ot work with diverse populations.

Interdisciplinary approach to higher education.

Focus on experiential learning through internships, practica, and clinical
and fieldwork experiences.

Close working relationships with regional community colleges.

Partnerships with community constituencies--local schools, health care
agencies, non-profit organizations, and businesses, for example.

Dedication to developing and providing opportunities for life-long
learning by providing access to higher education in the South Sound
Region.
UWT's omnipresent challenge is to manage its growth while maintaining and
building upon its ability to provide high-quality educational
opportunities. This (strategic planning) document outlines how UWT will
expand upon its commitment to high-quality educational strategic planning
as it grows, not only in size, but also in stature.
