In November, 1996, the University of Washington received a two-year National Science Foundation award (number NCR-9617039) to connect its campus network to the very high speed Backbone Network Service (vBNS). The bandwidth of the connection was expected to be DS3 (45 Mbps) for the first year with an upgrade to OC-3c (155 Mbps) during the second year.
