Type, Don't Peck

Help Center Introduction Type, Don't Peck

Typing, whether it be for google searches, writing documents, editing excel sheets, or writing code, has become a normal activity of everyday life for many people in the world today. One study measured the difference between average slow typists and average fast typists as 40 words per minute vs 23 words per minute - nearly double the speed!

To give you an idea of how much time saved this means, in copying a 10 page (assuming 300 words/page) essay, a “slow” typist would take 2 hours at a constant speed, a “fast” typist would take approximately 1 hour.

And these fast typists were  just average fast - professional typists often sustain a pace of 70-100 words per minute, allowing them to copy a 10 page essay in less than a half an hour.

Typing is a learned skill

Typing is a skill anyone can learn. There are a number of free and paid resources online to learn typing, and again, alternativeto.org gives a decent list. Here are two quick tips to get you started:

Don’t look.

Where keys are has to be muscle memory.

Intentionally practice, and push yourself

Studies have shown that the fastest typists learn to type with about %80 accuracy, and then accuracy improves when they settle on a high speed.

Got all that? Great, now you are ready to learn so much more, because you will be able to learn and apply it more efficiently!
