Web Development Environments (Vergil & Ovid)
IT Connect > Web > Publishing > Web Development Environments
What are the Web Development Servers?
Dante and Homer have separate areas for Web development, called Vergil and Ovid, respectively. These Web development environments provide tools (special commands, log file analyzers, compilers, etc.) that are not otherwise available on the student, faculty, and staff servers. They are designed to host user-maintained servers, and it is recommended that MySQL servers and other systems are installed on the web development servers.
Which One Do I use?
- If your website is hosted at students.washington.edu, or if you normally use dante, your web development environment is: vergil.u.washington.edu.
- If your website is hosted at any of the following domains, or if
you use homer, then your web development environment is ovid01.u.washington.edu:
- courses.washington.edu
- staff.washington.edu
- faculty.washington.edu
- depts.washington.edu
- If you are both a student and staff, then you may have access to both dante and homer. This means you can also access both vergil and ovid. You can use either web development environment: they are very similar and do not offer many differences.
Logging In
You will need to use a terminal emulator that supports SSH in order to connect to the web development environments.

Using the Web Development Environments
Vergil and Ovid are Unix environments, driven by entering Unix commands at a prompt. To learn more about Unix commands, see Using Unix on Uniform Access Computers.
Vergil and Ovid are also suitable for running do-it-yourself servers. If you intend to use them for this purpose, please review these guidelines first.
Logging Out
When you're done using the Web development environment, enter exit at the prompt to log out.
