Service Description
UW Information Technology provides this service to UW customers to install, manage, and maintain a firewall at the subnet level of the customer network. This establishes a security perimeter between the customer subnet and the rest of the networked world. All traffic crossing this perimeter in either direction will transit the firewall. Traffic between computers on the customer subnet are inside this perimeter and will not be affected by the firewall.
Monitoring
The firewall hardware is part of UW Information Technology's network core and is thus actively monitored 24x7 by UW Information Technology's Network Operations Center with on-call engineers who can be paged to resolve off-hour emergencies.
Availability
The managed firewall service is available to all UW departments who use the UW Information Technology data network.
Rules
As the firewall hardware is operated and maintained by UW Information Technology, customers do not have direct access to the firewall rules. Initial setup and future rule changes all must be done through UW Information Technology. Rule changes after the initial setup are emailed to UW Information Technology for implementation. These rules requests will be implemented within two business days, generally much sooner. Rule changes in response to an emergency can be escalated for a quicker implementation time. Rule changes can also be scheduled for future dates and times. The charges associated with rule changes are detailed below.

Set up
UW Information Technology will start with a baseline rule set and work with the customer to ensure the firewall is configured to their liking. The firewall will be inserted into the network at a time agreed upon between UW Information Technology staff and the customer. A conference call can be set up during this time to allow for quick resolution to last-minute issues. Some preliminary work may be needed to be done in advance of the firewall insertion. The required work and resulting charges will vary depending on the involved subnet and will be defined and communicated to the customer before the project is begun.
