Get ready to bike to campus in May for national Bike to Work Month. Sign up for the 2013 Commute Challenge presented by Adobe by visiting the Event Web site and join in the fun! Transportation Services will be sponsoring tons of great events throughout May to help prepare you and your friends for bicycling and to celebrate UW bicyclists so spread the word because the more the merrier!

Bike to Work Day

Date: Friday, May 17
Time: 6-9am
Location: Burke-Gilman Trail and Rainier Vista
Throughout Puget Sound, riders can stop by Commute Stations to pick up free prizes, snacks, city and county maps, bicycle commuting information, and have their bikes checked for free by bike shop station sponsors. The National MS Society is sponsoring the Commute Station at Rainier Vista along the Burke Gilman Trail. Recycled Cycles will be on hand to give free bike safety inspections and Commuter Services will be there to help with bike commute questions.

UW Trail Party

Date: Thursday, May 23rd
Time: 4-7 p.m.
Location: Burke-Gilman Trail Park between University Way and Brooklyn Ave
Come celebrate bicycling with UW Transportation Services and Cascade Bicycle Club at the UW Trail Party. There will be music, games, giveaways, and samples! While you’re there register your bike with the UW Police Department, get a free bike safety inspection from Performance Bicycle and a free basic bike fitting courtesy of Real Rehab Physical Therapists and R2 Bicycles. Real Rehab and R2 Bicycles will also be giving out free SmartID tags and doing a prize drawing for a free bike tune-up. Student Health Advisory Quorum will be selling safety equipment and the Cascade Bicycle Club can help you find the best bike routes around Seattle. We’ll also be joined by folks from World Bicycle Relief, and did we mention that first-time UW bike commuters and team captains participating in the Commute Challenge presented by Adobe will be invited to visit the Transportation Services tent for a special prize?

Fix-A-Flat Lab

Date: Wednesday, April 24th

Location: Commuter Commons (Husky Union Building Room 141)

Don’t let a flat tire ruin your riding fun or slow you down – you’ve got places to go! In this class, Cascade Bicycle Club instructors will teach you a few simple steps to get rolling again including:

  • Wheel removal
  • Tire removal
  • Find the culprit
  • Tube patching or replacement
  • Putting it all back together and…you’re off

Bike Maintenance 101

Date: Tuesday, May 1st
Time: 12:30-1:30pm
Location: Husky Union Building, Room 238

Spring is a great time to get up to speed on simple maintenance techniques that will keep your bike in tip top shape as you roll into summer. In this class, Cascade Bicycle Club instructors will reveal answers to questions such as, “Why aren’t my gears shifting?”, “Why isn’t my bike stopping?”, and “What is that grinding noise?” You’ll also learn how to:

  • Pump up your tires
  • Make minor adjustments to your brakes and shifting
  • Clean and lube your chain
  • Clean and inspect your brake pads
  • Maintain your gears

Intro to Bike Commuting

You’ve seen your friends having fun riding bikes… It’s easy once you know what to look for and gain a few skills. In this class you’ll learn about:

  • Traffic laws
  • Clothing, gear, and accessories to keep you visible
  • Road positioning
  • Carry stuff on your bicycle
  • Parking and locking your bicycle on campus

Rules of the Road

Date: Tuesday, May 14th

Most of us have been on one, if not both sides, of a conflict between a bicycle and motor vehicle. Much of the confusion and frustration surrounding these conflicts arises because one, if not both, parties are unaware of or not observing basic traffic principles. Buck this trend by learning about:

  • How traffic laws specifically apply to people on bicycles
  • Basic principles of traffic law pertaining to all vehicles on the road
  • How following the rules of the road will increase your safety, efficiency, and enjoyment of riding

  • Gear essentials - what to bring and what not to bring
  • How to plan your trip
  • What to expect once you’re on the road or trail
  • Camping/touring logistics and options
  • An actual Seattle-based bike camping trip you can do in 24-hours or less!
