Get ready to bike to campus in May for national Bike to Work Month. Sign up for the Group Health Commute Challenge by visiting the Event Web site and join in the fun! It’s a wonderful time of year to start bicycle commuting so help spread the word and promote cycling as an active commute option. Commuter Services will be sponsoring tons of great events throughout May to help prepare you and your friends for cycling and to celebrate UW cyclists so spread the word because the more the merrier!

Bike to Work Day

May 18th
6:00-9:00am
Burke Gilman Trail at Rainier Vista
Throughout Puget Sound, riders can stop by Commute Stations to pick up free prizes, snacks, city and county maps, bicycle commuting information, and have their bikes checked for free by bike shop station sponsors. The National MS Society is sponsoring the Commute Station at Rainier Vista along the Burke Gilman Trail. Recycled Cycles will be on hand to give free bike safety inspections and Commuter Services will be there to help with bike commute questions.

UW Trail Party

May 24th
4:00-7:00pm
Burke Gilman Trail Park between University Way and Brooklyn Ave
Come celebrate cycling with Cascade Bicycle Club and U-PASS. There will be a live DJ, games, giveaways, and samples! While you’re there register your bike with the UW Police Department, get a free bike safety inspection from Performance Bicycle and a free bike fitting courtesy of Group Health. Hall Health will be selling safety equipment and the Cascade Bicycle Club can help you find the best bike routes around Seattle. Zipcar will be available to show you some options for when you need more than two wheels. First time UW bike commuters and team captains participating in the Group Health Commute Challenge will be invited to visit the Commuter Services tent for a special prize.

Bike There! Urban Riding for Fun and Transportation

You’ve seen your friends having fun riding bikes… It’s easy once you know what to look for and gain a few skills. In this class you’ll learn:
• Traffic laws
• How to be visible
• Road positioning
• How to carry gear
• Locking up and parking considerations

Spring Bike Maintenance - Keep it Rolling!

Spring is here so dust off your bike and ride! Maintaining your bike is more important than ever to keep you riding smoothly and safely. We’ll reveal answers to questions such as “Why aren’t my gears shifting?”, “Why isn’t my bike stopping?”, and “What is that grinding noise?” It’s a great time to get up to speed on simple maintenance techniques that will keep your bike in tip top shape as you roll into spring. Learn how to:
• Pump up your tires
• Make minor adjustments to your brakes and shifting
• Clean and lube your chain
• Clean and inspect your brake pads
• Maintain your gears

Flat? Just Fix It!

Don’t let a flat tire ruin your spring time riding fun or slow you down – you’ve got places to go! Learn a few simple steps to get rolling again including:
• Wheel removal
• Tire removal
• Find the culprit
• Innertube patching or replacement
• Putting it all back together and… you’re off

Tour de Husky Campus Ride

May 29th
3:00-4:30pm
Meet in front of the Burke Museum for an around campus group ride!
Get your bike and join in! We’ll make stops at campus self-service bike stations and covered bike parking. Learn to use the Burke Gilman Trail and bike infrastructure in the neighborhood. Tour ends at Häagen-Dazs on the Ave with a coupon for $1 off an ice cream treat!
