At the UW Graduate School, we are exploring what this concept means for graduate education and our future, while reaching out more than ever to a global audience of prospective students, faculty, donors and friends. Throughout 2007-08, the Graduate School will offer a series of workshops, presentations and receptions focusing on the forces, trends and issues driving the internationalization of graduate education. All UW alumni and others are invited to these free events, coordinated with various university departments and community organizations: 
Innovative cell phone technology developed by University of Washington computer science and engineering doctoral student Tapan Parikh is helping small businesses succeed in developing rural economies internationally—and helped earn him the prestigious 2007 "Humanitarian of the Year Award" from Technology Review. 
UW graduate students help drive every aspect of the University's three-fold mission of teaching, research and service. Did you know that more than half the papers published by UW scholars annually are co-authored by graduate students? Financial support makes such partnerships possible and allows all graduate programs to recruit and retain the best advanced-degree students. 
Graduate study at the University of Washington is much more familiar and compelling now to top students from 49 Chinese universities after an intensive recruitment fair Sept. 22, 2007 in Wuhan, China. Graduate School Associate Dean for Student Affairs Dr. Elizabeth Feetham represented UW at the event and spoke with many of the 400+ undergraduate and graduate attendees, answering questions, distributing a colorful new recruitment brochure, and discussing the many reasons to attend UW and live in the Seattle area. 
A growing pipeline of students from Thailand coming to the UW for graduate study has been the focus of Graduate School outreach efforts recently as part of an ongoing emphasis on internationalizing graduate education. Increased dialog with Thai educators, government officials and others has taken place at various levels, with results focusing on improving students' educational experiences. 
Cross-cultural friendships and personal stories about doing fieldwork in anthropology form the core of a dynamic new book from the University of Washington Press to be released in October 2007: Fieldwork Connections: The Fabric of Ethnographic Collaboration in China and America. Sparked by an idea from a UW graduate student 10 years ago, the book is the first account of fieldwork told from the standpoint of both native and foreign ethnographers.
