Faculty-Student Team Runs, Walks to Raise Funds for Graduate Students First, Nov. 25

UW graduate students help drive every aspect of the University's three-fold mission of teaching, research and service. Did you know that more than half the papers published by UW scholars annually are co-authored by graduate students? Financial support makes such partnerships possible and allows all graduate programs to recruit and retain the best advanced-degree students.
You can win support for UW graduate students and have fun at the same time by running or walking in the 2007 Seattle Half Marathon on Sun., Nov. 25, 2007. Join UW Sociology Professor and former Graduate School Associate Dean Bob Crutchfield as he leads the Graduate Students First Team. This committed team follows in the footsteps of former Washington Governor Dan Evans, who walked in the 2006 Seattle Half Marathon in support of the UW Husky Promise scholarship initiative.
This year, Bob's team of graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, and friends will conquer the 13-mile race together. They aim to raise funds and build public awareness of the vital faculty-graduate student teamwork that generates discovery and innovation throughout the UW every day. Their goal is to raise $100,000 in gifts and pledges to the Graduate Students First Challenge Fund-triggering a 50% match from the UW Students First Initiative. This new fund will provide need-based fellowships to graduate students in all disciplines, ensuring that talented scholars can reach their potential regardless of economic background. The 2006-07 UW Foundation Board Chair, Orin C. Smith, made the first $5,000 pledge on Sept. 7 to show his support for this important effort. Look for a November mailing from the Graduate School with more information on what you can do to help us meet the Graduate Students First Challenge.
