Frank Garred
B.A., 1958
The Western Washington chapter of Society of Professional Journalists recognized Garred in 2008 for his lifetime of journalistic achievement. Garred is a member of the Communication Alumni Hall of Fame.

Ruth Pumphrey
B.A., 1964
Pumphrey retired after 20 years with KING-TV, most recently holding the position of assignment editor. Read more about Pumphrey in a story by journalism student Michael Carter.

Mike Peringer
B.A., 1957
A 2007 recipient of the UW Department of Communication Alumni Hall of Fame award, Peringer is the founder of Artworks, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping youths through public art projects designed to counteract graffiti. Most recently, Peringer reports that there is interest in doing a six-part television miniseries based on his book: Good Kids: The Story of Artworks.

Dave Ammons
B.A., 1970
Ammons, a 37-year veteran state government correspondent for the Associated Press, retired earlier this year. After almost four decades covering the state Legislature, Governor's office and state government in general, Ammons joined Secretary of State Sam Reed's staff as chief spokesman. Ammons also worked as the resident host of the TVW program Inside Olympia, interviewing prominent elected and appointed government officials.

Mayumi Tsutakawa
B.A., 1972
The Northwest Asian Weekly Foundation's annual Asian American Pioneer Dinner honors Tsutakawa, a 2008 UW Communication Alumni Hall of Fame honoree. The dinner is Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008.

Robb Weller
B.A., 1972
Weller is a prominent television producer and host (A&E's Top Ten, The Home Show and Win, Lose or Draw). He was recently honored with the UW Alumni Association's Distinguished Service Award, given to individuals who make outstanding efforts on behalf of the Alumni Association. Read more about Weller...

Dave Workman
B.A., 1974
A long-time journalist and editor, Workman spent 21 years as the Washington editor and senior staff editor of Fishing & Hunting News. He was named managing editor of two other publications, Hunter Education Instructor and Small Craft Advisory, owned by F&H News' parent company, Outdoor Empire Publishing. In 2000, he was hired as senior editor of a nationally circulated firearms newspaper, Gun Week. He is the author of Washington State Gun Rights and Responsibilities, and—with Alan Gottlieb—America Fights Back: Armed Self-Defense in a Violent Age.

Horsey is the UW Department of Communication's 2008 Distinguished Alumnus. He was the keynote speaker at the Department's annual graduation celebration this past June. Read a recent profile of Horsey by journalism student Meghan Peters.

Robert Laing
B.A., 1969; PhD, 1975
Laing is the diplomat in residence for the State Department at Arizona State University. He visited the UW campus this year and spoke to students about a career as a diplomat. He has spent more than 20 years working in foreign countries and is considering another tour for the State Department. Read a recent profile of Laing by journalism student Michael Carter.

Bill Chamberlin
B.A., 1967; PhD, 1977
Chamberlin is retiring from academic life after serving as the Joseph L. Brechner Eminent Scholar in Mass Communications at the College of Journalism and Communications of the University of Florida since 1987. He now serves as director of the Marion Brechner Citizen Access Project. He also is an affiliate professor of the UF College of Law. Chamberlin is the co-author (with Kent Middleton and William Lee) of a major undergraduate textbook in mass media law, The Law of Public Communication.

Eddie Pasatiempo

Pasatiempo is a partner at The Clarion Group, working at the firm's Kirkland office.

Scott MacFarlane
B.A., 1979

Angela Rosette-Tavares
B.A., 1984
Rosette-Tavares is a digital projects designer at the University of Washington Libraries. She has worked for the University since 1993 and is married to UW alumnus Joseph Tavares (BS and MS in Electrical Engineering); they have two children.

Deb Caletti
B.A., 1985
Caletti is a best-selling author with four books published and a fifth to be released in 2009. She is a National Book Award finalist for her second book: Honey, Baby, Sweetheart.

Greg Lane

Lane is the president and chief executive officer of the statewide public affairs cable television network. He took over this position in April 2008. Lane had been deputy chief of staff for Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna since 2006. Before that he was the attorney general's communications director, after also serving as a communications director in the Washington State Legislature from 1998 to 2005.

Robert W. McChesney

Monthly Review Press recently published McChesney's new book, The Political Economy of Media: Enduring Issues, Emerging Dilemmas. This volume culminates the research in his career to date, and includes his latest thinking on journalism, the Internet, global political economy and the burgeoning media reform movement and our broader changing political climate.

Barbara Clinton

Robyn Lattaker-Johnson

Lattaker-Johnson left Black Entertainment Television (BET) where she was vice president of program development. She is currently consulting.

Tina Kim

Mikkelsen reached his career goal when he returned to work in Seattle for KING-5 News last December. He's the South Sound bureau chief. Karas works in investor relations for Imperium Renewables, a start-up biodiesel company in Seattle.

Glenn Kuper

Glenn Kuper is the communications director at the Washington state Office of Financial Management (the governor's budget office). He has served as executive speechwriter for Govs. Gary Locke and Chris Gregoire, deputy communications director for Gov. Locke, and communications manager at the Department of Ecology.

Courtney J. Martin
B.A., 1998
Martin is working on her master's in Library and Information Science at San Jose State University. She is also managing a small branch of the Monterey County Free Libraries in Aromas, Calif., and working on-call for the Monterey Public Library.

Jenni Hogan

Hogan is KOMO morning news traffic anchor and she reports on transportation issues for the station. She is member of the Communication Alumni Club and a dedicated mentor to Communication students looking to break into broadcasting.

Erin Combs
B.A., 2003
Combs is a project manager for Pyramid Communications, a public relations company specializing in serving organizations working toward socially conscious causes. Her clients include The Seattle Foundation and California HealthCare Foundation. She recently spoke to a Communication class about her work at Pyramid.

Lucas Mack
B.A., 2004
Mack is an on-air, freelance reporter for KOMO-TV. He started his broadcasting career post-gradation at KNDU-TV in Kennewick, Wash., then moved on to KABB-TV, the Fox affiliate in San Antonio, Texas, before returning to Seattle.

Allison Cabellon
B.A., 2005
Cabellon works in New York City at Allied Live, an entertainment marketing agency whose clients include Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. She is an associate account executive in the Internet division.

D. Travers Scott
M.C., 2005
Scott is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication. He has published two book chapters based on his UW thesis research: "Tempests of the Blogosphere: Presidential Campaign Stories that Failed to Ignite Mainstream Media" in Digital Media and Democracy: Tactics in Hard Times (Megan Boler, Ed., MIT Press, 2008) and "Pundits in Muckrakers' Clothing: Political Blogs and the 2004 Presidential Election" in Blogging, Citizenship, and the Future of Media (Mark Tremayne, Ed., Routledge, 2007). Since graduation, Holman has worked with a peace building and reconciliation program in Croatia where she has served on the facilitating team and as a small-group facilitator. She has also taught English in Croatia, and has traveled in and around much of Eastern Europe. She is currently trying to learn the Croatian language and is hoping to spend more time in the former Yugoslavia.

Insalaco works at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in the External Affairs and Communications department. Her time is split between publications (internal and external communications) and media and public relations.

Leeds recently moved back to Seattle from San Antonio, Texas, and is working in KOMO-TV's sales department. She was an advertising executive and TV co-host at KENS-TV in San Antonio, moving there from eastern Washington, where she worked as a TV news reporter for KVEW, the ABC affiliate in Kennewick, Wash.

Erin Hicks

Hicks accepted a job as assistant editor at menshealth.com, based in Allentown, Penn. She is excited to start her first full-time job, and happy that Allentown is only 90 miles from New York City because she plans to spend her free time with friends and family living there.
