Sustainability
In spite of steady growth in the square footage with the construction of new buildings and in the amount of research conducted, the University of Washington continues to reduce electrical and water consumption through focused conservation measures. From fiscal years 1996 through 2006, the University of Washington Seattle campus has avoided $50 million in utility costs through its conservation efforts and programs.
The University of Washington’s comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability includes but is not limited to utility, building, landscape and transportation management, as well as waste reduction and recycling. Focus on Sustainability is a practical overview of environmental stewardship at the UW that will hopefully inspire and help organizations implement parallel programs.
