Call for proposals: 2020 Symposium

Every year we invite UW faculty, staff, and graduate students to present their work on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) at the UW’s Annual Teaching & Learning Symposium in April.

The Symposium is designed for interactive presentations and discussion on innovative evidence-based teaching strategies, whether it is work you have done in the past or are in the process of implementing. Presentations are in poster format and can not be larger than 4’ x 6′.

2020 Timeline for presenters

  • October 21, 2019 – December 9, 2019:  Call for proposals.
  • February 10, 2020:  Outcomes of the proposal review process are emailed to all applicants.
  • February 19, 2020: Deadline for applicants to confirm their participation.
  • March 9, 2020:  Full program (titles, abstracts, and presenters) is posted on the Symposium home page.
  • April 6, 2020:  Teaching & Learning Symposium.
    Posters must be set up between 1:35 and 1:45 p.m.

Proposal submission process

Submissions are accepted through a Catalyst WebQ in which you will be asked to provide the following:

1. Names and contact information for all co-presenters, as you would like them listed in the Symposium program.

2. A title (10-word maximum).

3. The type of project your poster will highlight (select one):

Scholarly Teaching Practice
Research on Teaching and Learning
Posters that feature instructional practices informed by reflection, observation, and/or published research.
Posters that feature systematic research projects on teaching and/or learning.

4. A brief (300-word maximum) abstract that addresses all of the following questions:

Scholarly Teaching practice projects:
Research on Teaching and Learning projects (completed or in progress):
  • Topic: What will you be sharing? (e.g. a specific approach, classroom activity, assignment, course design, or assessment method)
  • Context: What are the relevant characteristics of your setting: course or program, type of students, instructional issue, etc.?
  • Scholarly basis: What teaching reflections, observations, and/or published research inform this project?
  • Results: What did you learn by approaching instruction in this way? What makes it transformative for students, the field, you as an instructor, or teaching in general?
  • Application: What can instructors in other disciplines learn from this project and how can they apply it in different contexts?
  • Research question: What are you trying to find out or better understand?
  • Context:  What are relevant characteristics of your setting: course or program, type of students, instructional issue, etc.?
  • Methods: What methods and/or strategies are you using to examine your research question?
  • Assessment: How are you assessing the impact of this project on student learning? 
  • Results: What are your findings?
  • Application: What can instructors in other disciplines learn from this research project and how can they apply it in different contexts?
Please note:

  • Your proposal should be publishable as-is in the Symposium program and on our website.
  • Members of the review panel and the Symposium audience come from a wide range of disciplines; please write your proposal in language that clearly communicates your work to readers outside your field.

Important information about posters and the poster sessions

  • Plan to have your poster on display for the full event.
  • Your poster will be assigned to one of the two poster sessions. This allows solo presenters to visit other posters during their unassigned session.
  • Bring a backing (hard poster board) for your poster.  We will provide easels.
  • Posters can be any shape but should be no larger than 4’ x 6’.

Funding for graduate student presenters

Symposium poster presenters: Jamie Smeland, Miranda Vargas, Mollie Overby, Lee HicksGraduate-student presenters who are the primary authors of their posters may apply to the Donald H.
