Examination of metaphysical and epistemological problems from the works of Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, and Kant.
A detailed survey of 17th and 18th century philosophy, focusing mainly on issues in metaphysics and epistemology. While some mention will be made of other figures, the discussion will focus heavily on the following six philosophers: Descartes, Spinoza, and Leibniz, Locke, Berkeley, and Hume. We will read substantial excerpts from the writings of each of these authors, attempting both to understand and to critically assess their main ideas and arguments.
