Special Topics in Music History

Topics vary each quarter. Prerequisite: minimum grade of 2.0 in each of MUHST 210, MUSIC 303, and MUSIC 306.

Class description

"J.S. Bach" This course will explore representative works from Bach's entire career, including the Orgelbüchlein, Brandenburg Concertos, Well-Tempered Clavier, St. Matthew Passion, and Goldberg Variations. We will delve into the stylistic, aesthetic, and theological background of Bach's music, combining close score analysis with study of cultural context. We will use Malcolm Boyd, Bach as the textbook. There will be a midterm, final, and a final research paper.
