Study of the structural properties of language; introduction to generative transformational syntax. Prerequisite: either LING 200 or LING 400.
In this course, we will study the structure of sentences, and explore the rules that distinguish grammatical sentences from their ungrammatical counterparts. Our primary focus will be on the syntactic analysis of English; however, we will also look at the syntax of other languages and compare them to English.

Through regular problem sets and class discussions, we will gain experience with rigorous scientific argumentation and reasoning, and develop a working knowledge of generative syntax.
